Classes:

AcroDance
Is your child an avid cartwheeler? Do they love to be upside down? AcroDance is a physically demanding activity that combines dance technique with acrobatic elements and is great for FHDP students looking to enhance their agility, flexibility, & strength. AcroDance is meant to be a complimentary activity to our dance training rather than a tumbling or gymnastics class. Warning: They might want to run away and join the circus!
Junior 1 AcroDance: Age 7-9. Saturday 3:30-4:30
Junior 2 AcroDance: Age 9-11. Saturday 1:30-2:30
Preintermediate AcroDance: Age 11+. Saturday 2:30-3:30

Ballet
Whether your child gracefully twirls around the room and says the word “tutu” 20 times a day or has tried every activity in the books and is NOW professing a love of Ballet or talks non-stop about what they have to do to get that “killer hard split jump” in their jazz class, Ballet provides a strong and dependable dance foundation. Learn to stand with confidence, move with precision and develop accurate posture and alignment gaining poise, grace, confidence and strength. Ballet also teaches commitment, determination and body awareness. Studies include syllabus and free work that reflect the needs and progress of each class level. Because of the physical demands and expectations at higher levels, PreIntermediate, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Senior and Teen 2 classes attend twice weekly. Additional classes are recommended and sometimes required to strengthen and build technique. See each individual level for details. *NEW! Ballet Boys: Used by athletes to enhance and supplement their performance in their chosen sport, dance provides clear cross-training benefits for any athletic endeavor. Body awareness, strength, flexibility, balance, coordination are all concepts inherent in ballet class and it helps develop focus with a strong work ethic.

  • Ballet Boys:  ages 9+ on Fridays 3:30-4:30
  • PrePrimary: age 6 with no previous structured dance experience; age 5 with 1-2 full years of structured dance experience. Monday 3:45-4:30 or Saturday 9:30-10:15
  • Primary: ages 7-8 with no previous structured dance experience; age 6 if moving up from PrePrimary Ballet. Wednesday 4:45-5:30 or Friday 2:45-3:30
  • Junior 1: age 9-10 with no previous structured Ballet experience; ages 7-9 moving up from Primary Ballet. Wednesday 3:45-4:45 or Saturday 1:30-2:30
  • Junior 2: ages 9-11 moving up from Junior 1 Ballet. Thursday 5:30-6:30 or Saturday 9:15-10:15.
  • PreIntermediate: ages 11+ moving up from Junior 2 Ballet. Twice weekly class; each student chooses 1 “A” class and 1 “B” class. Preintermediate A: Either Monday 4:30-5:30 or Tuesday 6:30-7:30. Preintermediate B: Either Wednesday 4:30-5:30 or Friday 4:30-5:30. Students at this level are not required to take additional support classes, but DSS and/or Prepointe are recommended.
  • Intermediate 1: age 13+,  subject to teacher recommendation. Twice weekly class: Monday & Wednesday 5:30-6:30. Students at this level are required to take at least 1 additional technical class, for a minimum of 3 classes weekly, in any of the following: a) DSS or b) PrePointe.
  • Intermediate 2/Senior: age 14+, subject to teacher recommendation. Twice weekly class: Tuesday & Thursday 4:15-5:30. This is a combined level class. Students at the Intermediate 2 level are required to take at least 2 additional technical classes (for a minimum of 4 classes weekly) while students at the Senior level are required to take at least three additional technical classes (for a minimum of 5 classes weekly) in any of the following: a) Open Ballet, b) DSS, c) PrePointe, d) Pointe, e) Modern, f) Jazz.
  • PreTeen: For dancers age 10-12 with little or no ballet training. Wednesday 6:30-7:30
  • Teen 1: For dancers age 13+ with little or no ballet training. Wednesday 7:30-8:30

SUPPORT CLASSES: Designed to enhance our syllabus & only open to students of Free House Dance Plus.

PrePointe: PreIntermediate, Intermediate 1, and Teen 2 levels of ballet can benefit from this class. Students work through basic skills in order to strengthen technique and alignment, specifically towards going up “en pointe”. Physical development, maturity, physiology, good technique, hard work and the teachers evaluation of preparedness factor in to make this exciting decision. Wednesday 6:30-7:15

Pointe: For Intermediate – Senior level students with teacher recommendation. Includes barre and centre work to strengthen the feet and ankles, learn placement, and increase flexibility as they develop pointe work skills. (Note: Students must be assessed by a doctor and approved by the teacher before going up “en pointe”.) Thursday 6:30-7:15

Dancers’ Stretch & Strength: a supplementary class for Intermediate and Senior level students. Tuesday 5:30-6:30 or Friday 3:30-4:30

Character Dance/Variations
Are you full of anticipation and excitement when you walk through the doors of the theatre, take your seat and gaze out at the stage, mesmerized by the performers dancing before you? In Character & Variations class you will feel like a ballerina as you learn famous dances created by brilliant choreographers. You will also explore folkloric dances that have shaped the romance, tragedy and great comedy that is performed in ballet. A strong focus is placed on performance skills and engaging the audience. Live the dream! This class is for Intermediate & Senior level students. Not currently offered.

 

Dancers' Stretch & Strength
A class designed to strengthen the body, foster the development of flexibility, improve alignment and further support the students’ dance training. Open to all Intermediate through Senior level students. Tuesday 5:30-6:30 or Friday 3:30-4:30.

Flamenco
Is your child intense? Loud and Fiery? Harness that energy, stick a rose between their teeth and come discover Flamenco, the dance of Southern Spain, with its passion, intricate rhythms, beautiful body movement and percussive footwork that express the soul of Flamenco. Olé!
Junior Flamenco: Age 7+, no experience required. Saturday 3:30-4:30

Highland
Whether your family history traces back to the Scottish highlands or your child loves the sound of the bagpipes, the look of the kilt or the delicious taste of shortbread, Highland dance gives a heartfelt and magical connection to the tradition of a great country. Students will put on their ghillies, join their classmates and learn traditional dances performed in public events, before and after battles and at family celebrations. Intro Highland: Age 6+, with 0 to 1 year Highland training. Tuesday 6:30-7:30
Junior Highland: Age 8+, with 1-2 years Highland training. Tuesday 5:30-6:30
Intermediate Highland: Ages 11+ with 3 or more years Highland training. Tuesday 7:30-8:30

Hip Hop
Whether your child is dying to rock the floor and show off their mad style or they want to dance without the formal attire or technical pre-requisites; Hip Hop dance is powerful and electrifying. Students will learn about the history, music, culture, and styles that make Hip Hop one of the most popular genres of today. Hip Hop dance activates individuality, allowing each student the opportunity to exhibit their uniqueness and personal style. They are encouraged to let their voice be heard, groove wholeheartedly to the beat and bring pride and confidence into their dancing. Ain’t no half steppin’ here!

  • Primary: ages 6-8 with no structured hiphop experience. Friday 3:30-4:15.
  • Junior 1: age 9 with no structured hiphop experience; ages 7-9 moving up from Primary Hip Hop. Tuesday 6:30-7:30.
  • Junior 2: ages 10-11 with no structured hiphop experience; ages 9-11 moving up from Junior 1 Hip Hop. Wednesday 5:30-6:30.
  • PreIntermediate: ages 11+ moving up from Junior 2 Hip Hop. Tuesday 4:30-5:30.
  • Inter/Senior: ages 13+ moving up from PreInter Hip Hop. Saturday 3:30-4:30.
  • Teen: For dancers age 13+ with no structured Hip Hop training. Wednesday 6:30-7:30.

Jazz
Is your child full of personality? A little on the bold side? Or they want to be? Students can expect to strut their stuff in Jazz class. Jazz dance is a stylized movement form that has developed in parallel to American popular music. It promotes individuality and demands performance. Seen on TV, advertising campaigns, on stage and in musicals, Jazz dance is the leader of the entertainment biz. Students will improve musicality, move with power and learn to attack movement with a vigour that is Jazz. Students in PreIntermediate level and higher take 2 classes weekly. Because of the demands at higher levels, Intermediate 2 and Senior level students must also take ballet.

  • Jazz/Tap Combo: age 6 with no structured dance experience; age 5 with 1-2 full years of structured dance experience. Thursday 3:45-4:45.
  • Primary: age 7-8 with no structured dance experience; age 6 with 1-2 years structured dance training. Either Thursday 3:45-4:30 or Saturday 10:45-11:30.
  • Junior 1: age 9-10 with no structured Jazz experience; age 7-9 moving up from Primary Jazz. Either Thursday 4:30-5:30 or Saturday 12:30-1:30.
  • Junior 2: age 11-12 with no structured Jazz experience; age 9-12 moving up from Junior 1 Jazz. Either Tuesday 4:30-5:30 or Thursday 6:30-7:30 or Saturday 11:30-12:30.

Lyrical
Got drama and angst? This choreography-based class is for Intermediate and Senior level dancers who want to give voice to their feelings, passion and emotion. Lyrical dance incorporates jazz, ballet and modern dance techniques and is known for its expressiveness and musicality.

Inter/Sr: Age 13+ with strong dance vernacular through previous ballet + modern or jazz training. Friday 4:30-5:30

Modern
Is your child a pioneer of new ideas? An explorer extraordinaire? A tad on the rebellious side? Modern dance is the “wild child” of the formalized dance techniques. It rejects all the strict and defined rules of the ballet world. Modern dance promotes open-mindedness and supports self-expression. It is highly permissive and hugely creative. In Modern class, students will learn to use the floor, improvise, surpass barriers and discover their limitless movement potential, all while developing technical skills. Classes follow an updated syllabus of studies along with open work, designed to allow for flexibility and creativity in instruction. Because of the physical demands and expectations at higher levels, PreIntermediate, Intermediate, and Senior classes are twice weekly. It is required that students at Intermediate and Senior levels also take ballet. DSS is recommended.

  • Primary: ages 7-8 with no previous structured dance experience; age 6 with 1-2 years structured dance training. Wednesday 3:45-4:30.
  • Junior 1: ages 9-10 with no previous structured Modern experience; ages 7-8 if moving up from Primary Modern. Either Friday 2:30-3:30 or Saturday 11:15-12:15.
  • Junior 2: ages 11-12 with no previous structured Modern experience; ages 9-11 moving up from Junior 1 Modern. Either Monday 6:30-7:30 or Saturday 10:15-11:15.

Musical Theatre
Does your son or daughter spontaneously jump onto the table and start belting out tunes? Or do they shy away from attention? In Musical Theatre class students gain confidence and self esteem as they learn performance skills, accomplish basic dance steps and practice projecting their voice. Your child will connect meaningfully with their classmates as they work to learn famous Broadway show tunes. Parents are encouraged to get earplugs now!

Junior 1: age 7-12 with 0-1 year training in Musical Theatre; Monday 4:30-5:30.
Junior 2: age 9-12 moving up from level 1 Musical Theatre; Monday 5:30-6:30.
Teen: age 13+ with 0-3 years training in Musical Theatre; Friday 4:15-5:15

Performance Division
Is the recital your child’s favourite time of year? Do they shine on stage, making you burst with pride? The Performance Division gives serious dancers the opportunity to develop their talent, performance skills and deepen their passion for dance while learning choreography and preparing for performance. Placement is by audition.

There are 2 Divisions:

  • HALF YEAR: September to December. For FHDP dancers, ages 8-17. This division is all about producing our Christmas Show.
  • FULL YEAR: September to June. For Intermediate & Senior level FHDP students age 13+ who are registered in a minimum of four classes, including Ballet. This division is highlighted in our Christmas, Youth, Junior and Senior shows.

Auditions: for 2018/19 year were May 26, 2018.
Students unable to attend the auditions will be considered on an individual basis.

Be-bop. Diddley-doo-wop. Tip-tip-tap-tap. Bam wham zoo! Tap dance has the transformative power to make the body a dynamic sound machine. Each week when your child puts on their special dance shoes they will feel a lively beat bubble and boil within them. As tap dancers, they will live, breathe, feel and experience the playfulness, creativity and wonder that comes from making music. Students will develop a deep understanding of phrasing and musical form, improve rhythm and co-ordination and have a tremendously loud amount of fun. Classes follow a syllabus of studies that is routinely updated. Ba-dum-boom!

  • Jazz/Tap Combo: age 6 with no structured dance experience; age 5 with 1-2 years of structured dance experience. Thursday 3:45-4:45.

WeeBop™ (Preschool Dance)
Watch your child gallop, skip, spin and jump with a huge smile on their face in WeeBop™ where every class is a journey brimming with excitement, exploration and learning. Along the way, our dancers improve co-ordination and musicality, develop new skills, gain strength and endurance in an environment that encourages creative expression, all while preparing them to advance into the technical dance forms.

  • Level 1: age 3-4 with no structured dance experience. Monday 1:00-1:45; Saturday 10:00-10:45.
  • Level 2: age 5; age 4 with 1 year structured dance experience. Monday 1:45-2:30; Saturday 11:15-12:00.
